The Program in East Asian studies offers a major and minor that are interdisciplinary and interdepartmental. The primary purpose of the program is to introduce undergraduates to the knowledge, language skills, and research methods they will need to enter various academic and professional paths relating to the East Asia region (both North and Southeast Asia), with a focus on China, Korea, and Japan.
Major Requirements
Students who major in East Asian Studies engage in intensive Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean language study through the Center for Language Education. They work with faculty on such topics as Great Power Completion in the South China Sea, Korean politics, modern Japanese history and politics, BRIC countries, Chinese urban history, women in modern China, democracy, autocracy, and economic development in East Asia. The university encourages students enrolled in this program to take advantage of foreign study options.
Students must choose one focus area and complete all requirements listed for that area:
- history
- political science
- sociology
- history of science and technology
- history of art
- or an individualized program
Students should refer to the current academic catalogue for a current list of major requirements. Students who entered Johns Hopkins University in a previous academic year should refer to the catalogue of that academic year.
Minor Requirements
The minor consists of six courses, including East Asian language courses, and content courses listed or cross-listed with East Asian Studies. Please reference the academic catalogue for specific minor requirements.
